Course overview

What Are Delegation and Empowerment?

Delegation is trusting a colleague with a task and the authority to complete it, while the leader remains accountable for the outcome; empowerment is creating the trust, capability and room to act that let people own their work. The two days cover both: selecting what to delegate and to whom, giving a clear brief, setting decision rights, supporting without needless interference and coaching people to grow.

Interactive workshops, real-world scenarios and reflective exercises let participants examine their own workload and draft real handovers, the kind leaders in Costa Rica could make as soon as they return to work.

New and seasoned leaders alike learn to spread the workload according to people’s skills, give guidance without unnecessary interference and develop the future leaders in their teams, so organisations in Costa Rica gain more motivated, cohesive teams that own their results.

Why it matters

Why Delegation Matters in Costa Rica

Organisations in Costa Rica, like those everywhere, rely on leaders who do not let every decision wait for them. Leaders who delegate well and empower their people build teams that act with confidence and grow tomorrow’s leaders.

  • Leaders stretched too thin

Leaders who keep every task to themselves hold up the team and run short of time for what matters.

  • Capable people held back

Future leaders emerge only when people are trusted with real work.

  • Faster, closer decisions

People with authority in their own area can act without delay.

  • Self-reliant teams

Self-reliant teams keep organisations in Costa Rica on track while leaders are away.

The Knowles leadership approach

From Insight to Impact

Six steps follow one task around a cycle, from the leader’s choice to delegate it to the shared review at the end, and each pass builds more trust and capability in the team.

Delegation in action

  1. 1. ChooseWhat should I hand over?
  2. 2. MatchWho is ready for it?
  3. 3. BriefWhat does done look like?
  4. 4. EmpowerWhat can they decide alone?
  5. 5. SupportWhat help do they need?
  6. 6. ReviewWhat did we both learn?

Example exercises and tools

Learn by doing.

Hands-on tools, collaborative exercises and real-world scenarios help leaders release the right tasks and give colleagues room to grow.

Real-world scenarios and collaborative activities reflect situations a leader in Costa Rica could meet: a manager who checks every step of work they have handed over, a capable team member who could make decisions in their own area of expertise but is never asked, or team goals that drift away from what the organisation needs. Participants practise briefing, stepping back and reviewing, and leave with a delegation plan for their own role.
